Manuel Ocampo: Comprehensible Only to a Few Initiates

1 June - 20 July 2002

Galerie Nathalie Obadia is very pleased to present Manuel Ocampo's third exhibition in Paris. While his first paintings were charged with religious and political symbols, Manuel Ocampo chooses, today, to address the great questions of art history and the status of contemporary artists. He questions here the relationship of the artist with the critics, the institutions and the collectors.

While Manuel Ocampo has always introduced collages and texts into his paintings, he now also works with new technologies. Among his recent works, he uses digital printing on the canvas itself, which is then overlaid and painted with texts.
These texts parody the critical writings of different artistic currents such as minimal art and conceptual art. Manuel Ocampo poses here the question of the status of the art object.
